What is the first step in my bath or kitchen remodeling project?

The design phase will be the first step we take with you. Our professional design team will talk to you, listening to your dreams and needs. They learn your lifestyle and your overall household style. We will guide you through the multitude of details that are involved from the cabinet and counter choices to the floor plan and flooring options and to the best fixtures and lighting, even choosing the right appliances for your kitchen. 

How long does a bath or kitchen remodel take?

No two bath or kitchen remodels are the same, so there is not timeline set in stone. The design details and the availability of fixtures, materials, and products you choose will affect the timeline. The other piece of the puzzle that can impact the timeframe is the removal of the old cabinets, counters, and fixtures. If you’re the floor plan you have chosen has significant changes that require moving the electrical or plumbing, that can affect the timeframe as well. You can be sure that we will keep you informed every step of the process, advising you of any issues or problems.

Do the floors need to be completed redone to lay new tile?

Our team will take every step possible to not do more than necessary for the completed project you have in mind. There are times the sinks, toilets, or tub can cause a challenge, but rest assured that we will do our best not to disrupt anything that isn’t absolutely necessary.

What is involved in rearranging the bath or kitchen floor plan?

There are some bath and kitchen floor plans that are so mislaid, starting from scratch is the best thing to do – and that of course takes time.  Before we begin any demolishing of your current bath or kitchen, you will have spent time with our professional designers choosing the best layout for you. They will balance practicality and style, arrange the appliance and features that will flow best for you while showing off your new bath and kitchen.

Are exhaust fans necessary?

While exhaust fans in your bath or kitchen are not required by building code standards, as long as there is a window in the room, it can make your daily living experience more pleasant. They pull humidity out of the bathroom which will keep its finished look pristine longer. And in the kitchen, an exhaust fan can take out the smells that cooking can create so that it doesn’t permeate through the house.

How do I select new cabinets, counters, fixtures, and the other components?

Unfortunately, you can’t “test drive” these things like you would a car. You can shop the big box stores, but how they have them displayed can make it hard to make those decisions. The professional designers at Customs Construction can schedule appointments at plumbing showrooms where you can get a hands-on feel and get a thorough explanation of how their features.

Is frame-less glass something I need in my bathroom?

Frame-less glass is reference to the different shower enclosures that are made with 1/2″ or 3/8” glass. A thicker glass such as this is tempered, making it safe for bathroom use and strong enough for doors and dividing walls. Frameless glass shower doors and enclosures can be customized, giving you the personal style you want, making your bathroom all yours.

What is the best tile for the floors and in the shower?

For years, ceramic tile has been used in kitchen back-splashes and bathrooms. But today, you have unlimited choices to pick that include ceramic, glass, metal, porcelain, and stone.  

How expensive is replacing shower? 

Replacing the shower isn’t as expensive as you may think, unless it isn’t done properly which requires calling the construction company back.  Our team at Customs Construction will take every proper step to make sure your new shower is installed properly so that return visits aren’t necessary.

How involved is it to replace the bathroom shower?

We will begin by setting up protection on the floors, the walls inside and leading into the bathroom. Sometimes, removing existing tile will go quickly and sometimes it is a long process, chip by chip. Once we have it all up, we will bag it up and remove it from your home.

We then make any repairs to the floor, plumbing, and walls. Once everything is done, we install the new flooring and walls, using quality concrete board instead of drywall material and waterproofed tile. We make sure the shower floor has the proper tilt for draining. The last step we have is installing the tile with grout and applying sealer.

Is replace the tub and shower tile better than refinishing them?

In some instances, refinishing can be the better option if done professionally. The finished product will last for many years and minimize the expense of your remodeling job. 

Is replacing fixtures necessary in a remodeling job?

Technically, no it is not necessary. However, it is our recommendation to do so to get the most out of your remodeling expense. This may include replacing the kitchen faucet, garbage disposal, the shower head in the bathroom, etc. Sometimes, there are exceptions to this and our designers will be the best one to determine this.

Can I convert my bath and kitchen from gas to electric?

Gas appliances and equipment such as fireplaces, hot water heaters, ovens, and stoves can be switched to propane gas by installing a special jet. There needs to be space for a propane tank to be installed and we will need to verify if there are any building code restrictions. If there is not a natural gas line on the property or adjacent to it, we cannot set your home up for gas.

If switching over to gas isn’t possible, what alternative do I have?

Many homeowners have found that switching to induction cooking to work equally as good as gas cooking. Just as gas does, induction heating also offers precise control of the temperature and the timing, simple cleaning, and safety features. Induction cooking has a smooth top that doesn’t get hot.

Can the cabinets from my current bath and kitchen be reused?

Cabinets from your bath and/or kitchen are reusable – it is all dependent on the condition. Keep in mind these are high traffic areas and both are susceptible to water damage over time. By having them replaced, you’ll be able to add features like lazy Susan’s and pot drawers.

Do the cabinets need to match in my bath and/or kitchen?

No, not specifically. Your new bath or kitchen should reflect your design and style tastes. A contrasting look is possible and our professional design team will help you select the ones that work well together and the countertop fits.

Is opening the wall between the kitchen and an adjoining room a good idea?

One of the biggest trends that we have seen are homeowners wanting to give their home an open feel and look. Nothing can do this better than removing walls. The formal dining rooms and living rooms of yesterday or gone. Families and homeowners prefer the open concept, especially when entertaining.  

Are wood floors in a kitchen smart?

Wood floors give any kitchen a feel and look of cozy and elegance. And while standing water can damage wood, there are special cut-offs that can be installed so that any future busted water pipes won’t create standing water.

How do I know what size of garbage disposal, refrigerator, and other appliances to get for my kitchen?

The first step in remodeling your bath and kitchen will be meeting with our design team. They will listen to your desires and dreams then work with you to create and meet those with the practical side. The most common size for a garbage disposal is 1/2 horse power and then there is the decision of having a wall switch or an air switch, and the designer will discuss the pros and cons of both.  The same is true with all the appliances and fixtures. With so many options on the market today, your dream bath and kitchen is waiting for you.

Is the “work triangle” necessary in a kitchen?

Our design team will listen to your desires and dreams first. Then they will talk to you about practicalities. This strategically designed area between from the refrigerator to the sink to the stove is ideal in having an easy work flow and a good traffic pattern.

When it comes to the lighting in my kitchen, are dimmers a good idea?

Dimmers will adjust the lighting to make it brighter where you need it for working, or they can make the ambience softer for accent purposes. Our design team has found that by placing lighting under the cabinets to be popular among most homeowners for lighting up the work space while cooking and for the soft glow they offer at night. They can be useful in a bathroom as well that has cabinets above the counters if the bathroom is large enough.

What is a good number of electrical outlets for a bath or kitchen?

Most building codes require an outlet every four feet. Our design team will also create a place for dishwasher, garbage disposals, microwave, refrigerator, and stoves outlets as well.  In both the bath and kitchen, the outlets will be the GFI rated to prevent shock if the item you’re using comes in contact with water.
